Update Rollup 16 for CRM 2011: Investigating Possible Issues

We are investigating possible issues caused by Update Rollup 16 for CRM 2011 that may prevent managed solutions - including the ClickDimensions solution - from being successfully imported if a previous version of the solution was already installed. This may also impact CRM orgs that had UR16 installed and were then upgraded to CRM 2013.

The error reads:

0x8004F016 - A managed solution cannot overwrite the Attribute component with Id=<id-of-specific-attribute-component> which has an unmanaged base instance.  The most likely scenario for this error is that an unmanaged solution has installed a new unmanaged Attribute component on the target system, and now a managed solution from the same publisher is trying to install that same Attribute component as managed.  This will cause an invalid layering of solutions on the target system and is not allowed.

We are attempting to confirm with Microsoft if this is a known issue and whether they have a resolution for it. Pending the outcome of this investigation, our recommendation is to avoid applying Update Rollup 16 if possible.

Microsoft is still investigating this issue and has not provided a timeline on when or if a fix will be available. We will continue to monitor the situation as information becomes available. As of this writing, our recommendation is to avoid Update Rollup 16 for CRM 2011 as it may prevent updating managed solutions like ClickDimensions.

Thanks for the info Matt.  We are planning to upgrade to CRM 2013 in 3 weeks.  Will we encounter the same issue if we go to 2013 or will we avoid it as long as we skip rollup 16?

If you upgrade to 2013 and skip UR16 for 2011, you won't encounter any problem. Just don't install UR16 prior to upgrading.

Any update on this from Microsoft? We were to early with applying the UR16. Or too late with CRM2013.... depending on how you want to see it.

We do not have word from Microsoft yet on when all of the UR16 issues will be addressed. We are planning to implement a workaround in our next release, which is scheduled for April 15.

Hi, Microsoft are telling us that the managed solution issue is addressed in RU17 which is realised towards the end of April.

    Hi Dave,

Yes, we've heard similar comments from Microsoft about UR17. We still plan to try to implement workarounds within our solution file with our next release on April 15.

Some customers are reporting that Microsoft has an on-demand hotfix available for the issues caused by UR16. It is necessary to open a ticket with Microsoft support and confirm the issue in order to get the hotfix from them. The number of the hotfix is KB2952814. This fix will also be incorporated into UR17.

    Hi Matt,

Since we are already on CRM 2013 I'd rather would like to wait on the solution from ClickDimensions. Looking forward to it!

Is it the case that the KB2952814 (I cannot find this record in google....) is also for CRM2013? Or is it 2011 only?

The hotfix from Microsoft is for CRM 2011 only. My understanding is that the fix for CRM 2013 is slated for a future Update Rollup. Our release this week should be able to avoid the Microsoft bug in both 2011 and 2013.

Too bad no success yet. Till now I came this far.

    • Applied CRM 2013 UR2.

    • Published all customizations.

    • Downloaded solution package from ClickDimensions settings page.

    • Imported 6.0.0 solution package with Overwrite. Then the following in the log:

0x8004F016 A managed solution cannot overwrite the Attribute component with Id=d49b991b-623d-4ec8-9bce-c36cbd01c7a0 which has an unmanaged base instance.  The most likely scenario for this error is that an unmanaged solution has installed a new unmanaged Attribute component on the target system, and now a managed solution from the same publisher is trying to install that same Attribute component as managed.  This will cause an invalid layering of solutions on the target system and is not allowed.

Our new release (version 6.0.0) should help most customers who were impacted by the UR16 error to get past it.

If not, please open a support ticket and our team will see what they can do to help.

    Hi,

I am currently experiencing this with a client of mine.  What is your recommended approach to addressing this?  Is it requesting the Hotfix or making sure the solution is version 6.0.0?

Also - how do I go about getting the latest version of a ClickDimensions solution file.  We are currently upgrading from 3.30 to 5.0.5.

    Thanks in advance,

    James

    Hi James,

I would first start by updating to 6.0.0 instead of 5.0.5. The solution can be downloaded from the Auto-Update dialog on the ClickDimensions Settings page in the CRM Settings area.

    Hi Matt,

I have downloaded version 6.0.0 and still have the following attribute problem when we are trying to install into Microsoft CRM 2011:

A managed solution cannot overwrite a Attribute component on the target system that has an unmanaged base instance. The most likely scenario for this error is that an unmanaged solution has installed a new unmanaged Attribute component on the target system, and now a managed solution from the same publisher is trying to install that same Attribute component as managed. This will cause an invalid layering of solutions on the target system and is not allowed.

I am current working through this on ticket  #18335.  If you have any advice, please let me know.  I am thinking we need to get the Microsoft patch.

    Cheers,

    James

    Hi James,

We'll respond under the ticket. The majority of UR16 issues should be avoided with our version 6.0.0, but in some cases, we've seen a few customers where there are additional modifications needed to remove some EntityRelationship definitions from our customization file to get around a deeper Microsoft issue.

Update Rollup 17 for Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011 is now available from Microsoft:

    http://www.microsoft.com/en-ph/download/details.aspx?id=42672

Our pre-release testing of UR17 showed that it resolved the majority of issues with importing updates of managed solutions that UR16 caused for most customers. Please follow Microsoft's and your CRM partners recommendations for updating your CRM.

Matt would you recommend updating to 17 if we're currently still running 15? The IE11 compatibility is very enticing but we use a managed solution as well.

Same as Brian. I'm on RU13 and would like RU17 - does 17 seem to be ok? Thanks...

Yes, UR 17 seems to be fine and our current release has been modified to workaround most of the issues 16 introduced.

Hi Matt, We're running (CRM 2011) 13 for web and 16 for Outlook, will upgrading to the July  release cause us problems, or is that the current release you mention that has the workarounds in?

The problem that UR16 caused was during the solution import, so the Update Rollup version on the Outlook client is not related. If you have UR13 on your CRM server, then you should not have a problem. In any event, we have taken measure in our last two releases to workaround the UR16 bugs.
