Best way for "Managing Subscription List Opt-Ins with a Workflow"?



after reading the blogpost about "Managing Subscription List Opt-Ins with a Workflow" i am wondering why it should be necessary to have:

- a new field on the contact / lead / account

My idea was to use the "update marketing list members" functionality within the workflow as the 4th step.


Am I overseeing something?
