As of July 1, 2026 all businesses using an alphanumeric sender ID (e.g. "MYCOMPANY") to send SMS messages to Australian recipients must apply to participate in the Australian SMS Sender ID Register. Unregistered Sender IDs may be labelled "Unverified" or blocked by Australian carriers.
The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has published full details about these requirements here.
What does this mean for you?
Starting July 1, if you are using an alphanumeric sender ID (e.g. "MYCOMPANY") that has not been added to the Australian SMS Sender ID Register, SMS messages sent to Australian phone numbers may be labeled "Unverified" or blocked.
What do you need to do?
To register, follow guidelines from your SMS provider (Twilio, MessageMedia, BulkSMS). Your provider is your first point of contact for registration; Click cannot manage sender ID registration on your behalf. If you are unsure how to proceed with registering your sender ID, contact your SMS provider for instructions.
If your business operates in both Australia and New Zealand, you may need to take a dual approach:
- Australian numbers require a registered alphanumeric sender ID or compliant virtual mobile number.
- New Zealand numbers require an approved NZ short code (not alphanumeric sender ID)
- Sending to both countries requires compliance with local anti-spam and messaging regulations.
While Click cannot assist with registering your Sender ID with ACMA, if you have any questions about your SMS Connector setup within Click, feel free to open a ticket, a support chat, or email support@clickdimensions.com for assistance.
